Maria Lazar
Poetry From Excile
Discover a profound collection of poetry inspired by the experiences of exile, migration, and the search for love and meaning in the face of displacement. Edited by Kathleen Dunmore, Poetry from Exile features the voices of 14 poets from the Notts Poetry writing group, many of whom have personal histories of refugee or migration. The anthology was inspired by the unpublished poems of Maria Lazar (1895-1948), an author and journalist who was recently rediscovered and celebrated for her literary contributions. Lazar’s granddaughter, Kathleen Dunmore, uncovered these poems in 2020 and shared them with notts poetry at regular open mic events in 2022, igniting a creative response that culminated in this unique volume. Each poem expolres into themes of alienation, social and political struggles, and the enduring power of love. Join us in celebrating the resilience and creativity of those who navigate the complexities of displacement. This compelling anthology was launched on November 14, 2023, at the Nottingham Mechanics Institute, with a special lecture by Veronika Zwerger, director of the Austrian Exile Library. Poetry from Exile is more than a collection of poems; it is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the transformative power of art in times of hardship.
